Many of you will recognise Marjorie Skouras’ work… Known for her use of semi-precious stones, her signature turquoise Empire Chandelier is in my Dream Design List Top 10!
With a new lower-priced collection of pieces encompassing lighting, furniture and mirrors for Currey & Company and a limited-time Gump’s pop-up store coming in February, I was lucky enough to find some time to cyber-sit with with this busy lady. Her fun and open attitude to design and life is contagious. Here’s what she had to say…
HELENA HARDMAN: What is your design mantra?
MARJORIE SKOURAS: More is always best!
What is the source of your design inspiration?
It changes daily – I am constantly inspired by the funniest things…
What were you in a former life?
I was initially on the production side of the movie business, then I was the VP of Acquisitions for one of the premier independent film distribution companies, as well as a programmer for the feature section of the Sundance Film Festival, and finally, an agent for writers and directors…
What design book or magazine is currently sitting on your coffee table?
Syrie Maugham and The World of Interiors.
Do you have a ‘guilty’ design obsession you would like to share?
Taxidermy (smiley face).
Do you have a home accessory that you can’t live without?
A spray bottle filled with water and French essential oils (we are currently using either Clementine or Rosemary) that we use every morning to spray the sheets when we make the beds. They smell glorious, and it takes out all the wrinkles – looks like they are ironed freshly every morning!
Where would we meet for a drink in your home town?
The Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Which is your “must-see” local tourist site to share with out-of-town guests and why?
The Hollywood Sign – We live right under it!
Would you mind sharing a secret design source in your home town?
Art Services – they do all the framing for the most important art in LA, and can make the most extraordinary things in acrylic and glass!
Finally, what is next for your product line?
We are so fortunate to be having a Marjorie Skouras Pop Up Store at Gump’s in San Francisco starting February 28th for seven weeks with a party tied in to the Museum of Fine Arts Mid Winter Gala.
To see her full collection for Currey & Company, head over to their website. Additional, new pieces in this collection will debut at the 2012 High Point Market. And of course, for a full overview of Ms. Skouras’ product line take a look at her online catalog.
I am particluarly drawn to the warm reds and oranges in her new collection (other colors available) and her on-trend pieces in burnished gold.
